Blogger’s Unite For HUMAN RIGHTS!

May 15, 2008

Today is an important day for bloggers! We have the opportunity to UNITE and come together and help spread the word about some of the outrageous and inhumane issues going on in the world today. Everyday humans are suffering and their voices are not being heard. It is up to us…who have the right, who have the VOICE, who have the capacity to reach out-to make a difference and aid those in dire need by increasing public awareness and shedding light on the issues humans are facing today!

Stop Violence Against Women is a campaign to help break the silence around the scandal in which women are victims of violence.

“ At least one out of every three women has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime. In Europe, domestic violence is the major cause of death and disability for women aged 16 to 44. In the United States, a woman is raped every 6 minutes; a woman is battered every 15 seconds. Rape of women is widespread in armed conflicts such as Colombia and Darfur. Trafficking of women has become a global phenomenon where victims are sexually exploited, forced into labor and subjected to abuse. Murders of women in Guatemala, Russia, India, and other countries often go uninvestigated and unpunished. The experience or threat of violence affects the lives of women everywhere, cutting across boundaries of wealth, race and culture. In the home and in the community, in times of war and peace, women are beaten, raped, mutilated, and killed with impunity.”

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is the removal of part, or all, of the female genitalia.

“FGM is a dangerous procedure that often results in dire physical, sexual, and mental consequences. The procedure is usually

performed in unsanitary conditions, using objects like broken glass, tin can lids, blunt knives, scissors, or razors. Victims are not

given anesthesia or antibiotics and rarely have access to medical treatment. Infibulated women have their entire external genitalia

cut, scraped, or burned out. The subsequent raw wound is stitched together with cat or lamb intestines or thorns, leaving a small

opening for the passage of menstrual flow. The girl’s legs are bound together for up to two months, immobilizing her while wound heals over.”

Most often FGM is conducted in poor hygenic conditions which can lead to major infections if not death! Women must be continually cut open for childbirth and resewn afterward, a process which results in a mass of thick scar tissue. This makes childbirth not only excruciatingly painful,  but also extremely dangerous as it prolongs labor, obstructs the birth canal, and often causes perianal tears in the mother.

“An estimated 135 million girls and women have undergone genital mutilation,

North African countries, FGM is not inherent to any nation or religion.”

and two million girls a year are at risk— approximately 6,000 per day. Although it is predominantly practiced in twenty-eight

There are many human right issues that deserve attention and I hope that this unification will bring some of them to light! Being a women in the United States is a such a privilege. Our voices are heard and respected. Although, we have some abuse that takes place in our country it is nothing like going through such a life changing experience like FGM. Fortunately, I live in a world with choices and rights but to imagine a life without…

Help The Soldiers Call Home!

May 14, 2008

After learning about the several cell phone recycling programs that donate proceeds to environmental causes…I decided it would be a great idea to get other’s involved. For Tristan’s Earth Day 1st Birthday party, I asked guests to bring a cell phone they were no longer using. I had a competition to see who could bring the most retired cell phones. My dad ended up being the person who brought the most phones. Way to go, Dad! To make a long story short-my Grandma Zona, called me a few days after the party inquiring about my intentions with the cell phones. She suggested I send them to the soldiers! I had no idea there was such a cause… a mission to help our troops call home! $5.00 is received for every phone collected and calling cards are  then purchased and distributed to our service men and women.  What a wonderful gift for those men and women serving our country!  Check out this YouTube video that gives you a litte more insight about the program.

Initially, I was going to send the cell phones off to Recycle My Cell Phone but after the phone call from my Grandmother and oddly receiving the program envelope with an Amazon order I figured it was all for a reason. I found out there is drop off location, at the fairgrounds in my town, so tomorrow I plan to take them over. You can also print out pre-paid postage through their website and they offer prepaid postage envelopes (like the one I received)!

Green Basics In The Laundry Room **Re-Post**

May 13, 2008

I’d like to share a few green tips for the “washing” room! For starters, when using detergents for you eco-wee one, you want to be sure that their fragrance free, no dyes, and safe for the planet. There are many detergents to choose from- but as I mentioned in the “Get A Load of These” post  we use Allen’s Naturally. It does the job well and doesn’t require much liquid for a load (1/4 cup or less). Also, instead of dryer sheets we use a dryer ball which softens fabric and takes care of the static cling! Recently, I’ve used the Shaklee unscented biodegradable dryer sheets. I can use them in the dryer with Tristan’s clothes without the worry of toxic chemicals leaching into his skin. We always keep our ”Mr. Tristar’s” clothing in a wicker basket or one made of cloth.

I line dry his clothes when I can- and for the little tiny socks- JUST lay those out on a baking sheet and bake btwn 11am to 4pm (when sun is @ HOTTEST temp) for a couple of hours on a non-windy day! It’s a gusty town where I’m from…! In any case, when trying to be energy efficient launder clothes after 7pm and wash in cold water. If you do use the dryer the same time applies and if you can, try to catch the dryer beofre it ends- often times the clothes are dry before the cycle is complete!

I live in a hard water area so adding 1/2 cup of Borax to the water will soften it. Also, Borax can be used to brighten whites and of course for many, many, other uses but that’s another post…on the way! :) I’ve also used Dr. Bronner Liquid Castile Soap to clean out the washer from too many cycles of dirty diapers. I usually do this about once a month-depending on the amount of poo. Ewww.  Add about 1/4 cup of Liquid Soap and 1/2 cup of Borax to wash - add 1/2 cup of vinegar in rinse cycle to disinfect- you can also use hydrogen peroxide. Whichever suits your fancy Vinegar will naturally soften your clothes too! For tough stains on “Mr. Tristar’s” clothing we use Mother Natural Stain Remover- it’s vegetable based, all natural and non toxic!! We use their hand sanitizer too!

I like to seperate my laundry when doing it- for instance, jeans with jeans- shirts with shirts, towels w/ towels- etc.  In my opinion the washing gets done better! I always was blankets and towels on gentle cycle- and some of Tristan’s clothes that have embellishments! I do Tristan’s clothes laundry about once a week- I try to keep it to a minimum…!! Diaper laundry is another story!! *lol*

Any laundering tips you’d like to add- what ways do you green your laundry rooom? Do tell!!! Enquiring minds want to know…

Crunchy Tuesday **Re-Post**

While cruising around the blogosphere today- I landed at the Raising Peanuts site and was inspired to do my first Crunchy Tuesday post! I related to her post so much because last night I gave a breakdown of my eco-style ways for my parents not to keen on the Echoage idea. Basically their question about Echoage is what sparked the green rant!. So…

Here are a few crunchy granola thoughts-

I’m passionate about living this life as simple and organic as possible for a number of reasons!! Since I belive it is our responsibility to partake in reducing our impact each day- I try to base my life around the 3R’s philosophy…yet at times it can be challenging. Sometimes I  find myself captured in all the stimulus and become the “lazy environmentalist”! Most days, I’m full speed ahead with plenty of gusto (my family thinks I’m a crunchy nazi) but for us mama’s here blogging it’s just another day in our granola living life. I’m a happy green hippie-and fortunate enough to be SAHM. I’m learnig more and more ways to become self sufficient and ways to raise my eco-bambino! Which, I enjoy sharing with YOU!

The idea of being self sufficient and living on your own land and off the grid would be my ideal way to live. It is a great way to minimize the waste that we contribute. Lessen our carbon footprint, that’s for sure. Living the sustainable lifestyle is something I strive towards daily.

Each year my husband and I try to add a couple new ways of going green. This year, we decided to raise chickens to produce fresh organic eggs.  We have 3 chicks. They’re 2 mos. old now. It’ll be nice to start saving the $6.00 or so we spend on organic eggs once they start laying.

Recently, I’ve been a juicing/smoothie queen. I’ve been making a smoothie just about every morning with organic fruits! I was addicted to Jamba Juice for awhile but quickly realized how unearthy I was being by contributing to Styrofoam production! YICK… can’t have that on my eco-conscience…(as much as I LOVE the Acai Berry smoothie)… after realizing we go through a lot of juice too…a light came on upstairs and I’ve blending and grinding since. Making homemade applesauce is easy too! Afte r I go through my organic V-8, I want to start making fresh tomato juice as well- especially in the summer when the tomatos are by the basket full! This summer we are planning to pickel and can some of our harvest and make relishes or jams! A little taste from our garden all year!

We’ve been talking to our neighbor who plants his garden like the Indians and Pilgrams did it…digging holes and filling them with compost and then planting on top of it! He fishes in the nearby aquaduct and will put an entire catfish in the ground (homemade fish emulsion). He also makes his own bone meal which we may start doing too! Or rather, my husband might start doing- crushing bones of chicken, cow, pig, etc. not my kind of thing but it will enrich our garden soil . I was a vegetarian for years before I decided to eat meat again. Recently, I’ve decided to start going “veg” twice a week. I may even go back to my non meat eating days! My husband will always be a meat eater…he raised animals growing up with the 4-H program…he’s my little farm boy! He has all the living on the farm knowledge- which is very helpful!!

All in all, my son is most important and being an eco-mama raises my awareness for his well being and our planet as they work hand in hand. Especially, when you’re living  la vida mama naturale’!! My number one reason (upon reasons) truly stems from my childhood and it is the love for nature. I can be an anal crunchy mama too and sometimes I have to come back down to EARTH (LOL ) and realize that trying to be completely ORGANIC can cause a war with the world and beating myself up over it isn’t going to help! We try right!!

What are your eco-pet peeves?!

Please share you thoughts, I would love to hear your comments!!! !

The Great Outdoors…

May 12, 2008

No raccoon’s or lamp guns…!!! LOL!! This weekend the hubby took Tristan and I camping. It was a fun trip but I wish it were longer. It was neat watching Tristan adapt to life in nature. He sure doesn’t mind getting down and dirty…lol!! He was all over the place, pointing and babbling like crazy. He kept saying “aqua” (water, in Spanish) which meant he wanted me to take him to the creek behind our campsite. He’d start to pump his legs if we’d get anywhere close to water or lake. He especially enjoyed himself in the natural hot springs we visited! Definitely the highlight of our trip. We were able to get to two different ones this time around and it was absolutely amazing!!! The best Mother’s Day gift I could ask for (besides breakfast at Whiskey Creek in Bishop, YUM): being with my family in nature. Oh! and our stroller is awesome (Peg Perego AT-4)- what other stroller will get through a maze of trees pictured below???

Calling all ECOMOM’S

May 8, 2008

The Mast Head

This morning, I had to opportunity to  join a conference call with the EcoMom Alliance Founder Kimberly Pinkson and other EcoMom affliates such as myself. I believe they said it was something like 40 or so of us on the phone from all over the U.S. It was so inspiring. I’m going to start an EcoMom page hoping to lure other EcoMom’s out there and maybe even in my town!!! I’d love to hear from the other EcoMom leaders out there or EcoMom’s in general! Let’s start networking and sharing ideas. I’m very new to EcoMom so it would be nice get in touch with all of you!

For information about EcoMom visit www.ecomomalliance.org

Alright peeps, I’m off to the Eastern Sierra for Mother’s Day weekend!! Going to Bishop for a little fishing (only catch enough for dinner) and for a little great outdoors action. I’m planning to conserve water while camping because there are no showers available. Just the way we like it! Other than that, we try to minimize our waste by cooking one pot meals and using biodegradable tableware. We also use solar lights around camp for a little light in the evening. If we have a fire we use newspaper and lint to get the fire going! We also have a washer ring that we take along with us for areas that do not have fire pits. It’s been in the family for awhile. I grew up having campfires in the washer ring. Obviously, being respectful to nature while camping is very important. PACK IN PACK OUT is the theory when camping especially when hiking! There’s nothing better than roughing it and getting away from all the stimulus. Plus, it will help me get grounded. I’ll be back to post on Monday maybe even late Sunday! So, HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY to all you mama’s out there!!!!! :)

ECO- GREEN TIP: brought to you by Sierra Club- The Green Life Newsletter: This Mother’s Day, ditch the wrapping paper and embrace the traditional Japanese art of furoshiki (fabric) wrapping. It’s an eco-friendly way to dress up a package, and the fabric doubles as an extra gift. Use a tablecloth, pillow case, or napkin, and try out these furoshiki wrapping techniques to make your mom proud.

Chick, Chick…Chick!

May 7, 2008

Our chicks, Fluffy, Henrietta, and Dixie are getting so much bigger- they’re ready to start eating chicken scratch. We’ve been feeding them grain and organic veggie scraps. By the end of summer, we should have fresh eggs! Oh boy. I can’t wait. With the price of eggs increasing, it’ll be nice to have our own. I’m really looking forward to it. Tristan loves to go out in the morning and evenings to interact and feed the chicks. He’s not afraid of them at all. In fact, whenever we feed them he’s always reaching out to pet one. These chicks are definitely happy and love their home. They’re so friendly they began posing for pictures!!

May is National Egg Month is recognized because egg sales usually slow after Easter (Easter was sooo early this year, too) so the egg industry wants to remind everyone of the many benefits of “the incredible edible egg”. Tristan loves his eggs scrambled with goat cheese sprinkled on top or poached!!! We love eggs- and I’m looking forward to frittatas, quiches, deviled eggs, boiled eggs…eggs, eggs and more eggs!  : )

Go to http://www.incredibleegg.org/egg_facts_basics.html to learn more about eggs!

A few eggscellent tips!

 Easy Deviled Eggs
Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all broken up. Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bag away when done easy clean up.

Wanna know how to tell if an egg is boiled or not…an egg that’s not cooked throughly will not spin…one that is hardcooked will spin! You can’t spin an egg normally…try it!

Save your pickle juice or pepper juice- add hardboiled eggs= Pickled eggs!

Remember these??
